Welcome to Topics in Social Emotional Learning & Development: Advising and Counseling Students Beyond the Classroom

In this course we will explore different definitions and frameworks for Social Emotional Learning, including educational theories related to SEL, a brief history of the various concepts which preceded SEL, and challenges inherent in describing this conceptually fluid concept.  We will examine the numerous skills, mindsets, attitudes, dispositions, and behaviors included within the domain of SEL.  We will discuss how educators can adopt data-based decision making to determine which SEL competencies need to be strengthened in their school and to assess progress in students learning these skills. We will consider various pedagogical approaches for teaching SEL including explicit instruction, academic integration, and embedding SEL into instructional practices and schoolwide protocols. We will address the importance of developing culturally responsive approaches to SEL and of building adult capacity to teach these skills. In addition, we will discuss how to recognize when students need greater support than is offered by SEL and symptoms of some common mental health issues in adolescents
